Do you want a guard dog barking without the hassle of owning a dog?

Although real estate prices have been falling over the past two years, the house represents the largest investment people ever make. Unfortunately people spend less on security alarms in the home than they do for a car alarm.

Rex the electronic watchdog is perhaps the most efficient use of their money when it comes to home security. Remember that a property crime occurs every three seconds with a home burglary every 15 seconds. These types of crime are on the rise, bucking the national trend.

Watchdog is always on the job when it's plugged in he can "see" through thick doors, walls and windows of up to 30 'away. Once motion is detected the sound of a dog starts barking. As the intruder gets closer, barking increases in frequency and intensity.

The electronic monitoring device can help guard homes, apartments, mobile living homes, RV's, jewelry stores, hotels, businesses, warehouses, or public and or private buildings of virtually every kind.

Rex offers:

• Reliable protection 24 hours

• No installation required

• Protection with none of the problems of having a real dog.

• switches for monitoring the tranquil sounds of nature with the simple switch of a button.

• Variable distance sensitivity (up to 30 ') and volume control.

• Senses movement through walls, doors and windows to alert you of the arrival of a visitor.

• Zero maintenance.

Police officers of the country most agree that the sound of a barking dog is a major impediment to theft. 90% of police believe alarms deter thefts at home too. Why not get both in the electronic watchdog.

As a bonus, as people in rural areas can attest, the electronic watchdog works well scare away bears and other animals out of the backyard.

Thus, for the best value on the security of your home, office, apartment or a trailer to get yourself the security of electronic surveillance without the need to own a real security dog.

I've had mine for 6 months. It may take a little time to the position him for that area you want, sooo? Big deal if it barks when I leave the house, I said, "Guard the house". hahaha. Sounds like a German Shephard and scares the mailman.
A policeman friend of mine said it is super for a single person living alone, and no thief is going to waste their time trying to decide whether or not real, when you can go to the house next door.

Make sure it is at the right distance. I guess when you listen long enough it sounds a little mechanical should make bark more random. But I would buy another.

Rex is multi-directional. that means he detects movement in all directions. I sometimes think that birds can be detected even landing on the roof top. Since I have a cat, the only place she could put Rex was the garage. To my surprise, my garage door, which was made of synthetic material (fiberglass likely), completely blocked the signal, but Rex was through stucco walls very well. I placed it next to the wall. He covered part of the road leading up to my porch, the porch itself and beyond. I say "beyond" because even Rex detects motion in the kitchen, on the other side of the porch. He barked when I moved into the kitchen. I did not care during the day, but the barking is annoying in the middle of the night, when I got up and fixed a snack. I was afraid to wake the neighbors. My solution was "remote Rex". I connected a wireless remote control switch (also bought at amazon.com) and turned it into and out of the kitchen. The barking sound is somewhat mechanical and repetitive, if you have time to listen carefully, but I really doubt that a casual thief will care to stay and listen to the Rex. It's not as good as a real dog, but it comes up as a deterrent against theft. Incidentally, if you want to get a real dog, please go to your local animal shelter for one. Do not buy in a pet store.

We enjoyed our Rex Plus for just about two weeks since our best friend — Buddy Boy expired at 12 years old.

We found REX to be picking up our movements within the house alarming at as much as the movement at our front door so I emailed the company STI Technologies… 800-888-4784 x 204.

[...]

Here is STI Technologies reply to our email: "You may try putting something metal behind the unit to help block the sensor and turn down the sensitivity when you are home, but just as it acts as s a motion sensor can pick up movement from almost a 30' range." jweeil@sti-usa.com Jenny @ Customer Service

So, I took an old, metal computer, removable side panel and made our Rex a dog house … I cut out a side and top first to lay over the side and top, then a side panel for the open side, and then a back panel. This is some heavy metal and my tin snips barely could cut through it.

Once the dog house was in position, I moved him to a window so that he could monitor the front door and doorbell. I covered all but the front of him with the metal Rex Dog House that I made and turned it to full sensitivity.

To my surprise, Rex did great until activated and then Rex would do a single bark every 5-6 seconds which was annoying. So, I removed the back panel and put it on the side that we walk by in the house and we've had no more problems. Rex is now turned to maximum sensivity and does not turn on as we scoot up our stairs — Rex is just about 12 feet away from us walking. Rex fully monitors our front door area through the front window and the dog house looks pretty good too.

It may take a little experimentation to see which dog house configuration will work best for you since I did not like turning the sensitivity way down.

You would think that the company would shield all but the front but evidently they do not.

I will post a photo of the new Rex Dog House when I get a chance.

I love REX the Watchdog with his new Doggy House! HEEE, HEE — and REX scares the heck out of our mail woman!

Good Luck,

J, San Antonio

user comment Rex Plus, The Electronic WatcHDog REX PLUS WORKS WITH A TIMER

REX PLUS is a fantastic product ! I will be ordering a second one from Amazon. My first REX I have had for over 14 years, before there was an internet. It works like new. Now I've discovered that you can plug it into an appliance timer, and the REX will turn on and off at whatever times of day or night you program the timer. This is so convenient, as we have it in our Amish gazebo, and we time REX to come on at 12 midnight and shut off at 6:00 AM. That way we can stroll into our gazebo throughout the day not having to disarm our REX. I'm going to buy another REX to place by the upper deck door on the 3rd floor of our house. If you set the sensitivity to LOW, but put REX in front of the deck door, one can walk into the hall without alarming REX, and REX will still bark loud when someone enters the room where it's positioned. I highly recommend you buy REX PLUS. And incidentally, the barking sounds are very menacing !

user comment Rex Plus, The Electronic WatcHDog Doesn't matter if Rex sounds/is real

Rex is a motion-sensing noise-maker, that increases the barking intensity/frequency as 'intruder' advances. Rex performs that function very well and is very realistic. Works great when I work late alone or when I travel. Rex also comes with with a prominently placed big and heavy chain leash and huge partially-chewed rawhide dog bone, to finish illusion.

COULD someone stay around for several minutes (or make repeat visits) and eventually figure out it's probably not a real dog? Sure. But It isn't that easy to figure out WHERE the sound is coming from and it takes time to FIND IT to try and shut it up. (Try out new positions, don't always keep Rex in the same place.)

Unless your dog is specially trained, it may not alert you to an intruder, or may not be able to defend ITSELF from an intruder. (A Rex can't be bribed by food.) So be smart and realistic when thinking about your safety options. Rex also has a very pleasant bird, rain forest mode, if you just want to know someone has entered a certain area. I've given already three away as gifts over the last few years to some people who needed a bit of extra security.

And, of the eight people Rex 'warned' me about during our years together? Not one approached after the first bark.

Product works well.

Alarm will go off through a wooden door and glass and aluminum door.

Other appliances in your home can trigger his alarm, like: phones, refrigerators and microwaves.

Does sound like a real dog to the uninitiated?

user comment Rex Plus, The Electronic WatcHDog Not as good as a real dog in burglar prevention.

The electronic sound of a dog barking does not sound like a real dog. The sound is distorted and sounds electronic. It fools people initially, but if they hang around, they soon catch on that it is not a real dog. Perhaps it may be just enough to deter a burglar though, and that would make it worth it's expensive price.

The device monitors an outside area, but it monitors the inside area even better. This means that everytime you go near it, even while inside the house, the alarm activates, which you don't really want it to do. I tried putting heavy books around the back and sides of it, but it still activated whenever anyone went near it while I was inside the house. Ideally, you would need to place it somewhere that you do not go near while you are at home, or else only activate it when you go away from home.

The good news is you don't have to clean up after it or feed it, and it stops barking when you turn the juice off.

It's very easy to set up, just plug it in and adjust the sensitivity and volume control knobs, that's it!

Despite it's shortcomings, I may even buy another one for my side door as I am paranoid about burglars. It does have a wow factor when your neighbors learn about it. I don't know of anything else quite like it on the market.

user comment Rex Plus, The Electronic WatcHDog Pretty Good, But Not Great

Rex came to live with me several months ago, and while I don't think he will fool anyone for very long, he might be just enough to make a burglar go to the next house.

I have a few complaints about Rex. First, he seems to detect motion better inside than out. I solved this problem by turning him on only before I leave; otherwise, he'd be barking every time I walk past him. My other complaint is that his bark (and I did not find it to be as artificial as some other reviewers, especially from outside) does not vary enough. He seems only to have an occasional single woof, but when someone outside approaches, it's exactly the same "loud" bark, repeated over and over, can sound phony if you listen often.

Since most burglaries are committed during the day while people are at work, he's better than nothing, so I would purchase again. I would suggest putting some "beware of the dog" signs on your fence to reinforce the idea that there is a real dog inside to discourage intruders.

user comment Rex Plus, The Electronic WatcHDog Not good for log home

Review Date: June 4, 2009
Reviewer: N. Weaver,
The instructions state it will not work with really thick, dense walls.

The instructions are correct. It will not work with log or concrete walls.

The sensitivity has to be set so low it is useless. Set the sensitivity higher, and it barks all the time.
